As a Canadian, Trump is a symptom of your sick society. If the American people aren't accountable for him then what the fuck are we doing?

It’s obvious that us Americans are dealing less with a western democracy than we are with an eastern oligarchy and we don’t have the tools to combat it.

u/geoken 1h ago
During all the recent stuff with the US soccer team, I realized how this sentiment seems less and less true.
There were so many people who reacted almost violently to being called maga or a Trump supporter…..but they immediately adopted all the hallmarks like whataboutism, doing mental gymnastics to support ‘their team’, descending into American exceptionalism, etc. These are people who strongly purported to not be Trump supporters.
It really made me feel that adage the Trump isn’t the problem, but the symptom. Maybe it was just a bad sampling.

Sorry, it’s an heirloom. My great great grandparents left Europe for the same damn reason.
Honestly, with the stuff our media is feeding my neighbors, I can’t even talk to anyone. Also, it’s hard to keep a job when you’re pro-workers rights here. I mostly work for small companies these days because I get auto rejected at bigger companies once their ATS cross-references my name and address. After getting beat down this hard and without my propaganda-fed neighbors being willing to engage, exactly what should I be doing?

Unfortunately I don’t think we can disown him. America elected him twice. And he won the fucking popular vote after committing an act of sedition, trying to falsify votes in an election he lost, and being convicted of fucking rape.
We have to recognize that tens of millions of voting adults gleefully support this monster. They’re enthusiastic about him even now, even after the endless parade of shit he’s perpetrated and damage he’s caused. America has been rotting from the inside out for decades.
And frankly the inability of the opposition to present alternative leadership that can defeat Republicans is itself an indictment of our people. We are rudderless, we’ve morally and intellectually atrophied, we’ve allowed this rotten spirit to permeate every level of society and I just don’t see a way out of it. Something is deeply fucked up with our people and I don’t see it fixing itself.

I don't think it is fair to lump all Americans in together. For example, if California had the power, it would certainly help Canada.
•
u/CMDRTragicAllPro 8h ago
2/3rds is a majority remember. Anyways, California the state with 40m people to match Canada’s 40m people but spread over roughly 25x less land? The same California that has a gdp twice of all of Canada combined? That California?
If Canadians can figure a way to have the power to help you guys, I’m absolutely sure you can find the power to help us. But you don’t. At least not nearly as frequently as we try to help you guys.
→ More replies (6)•
u/RCer1986 7h ago
In this 2/3rds example are you lumping in the people who didn't vote at all? If so, totally fair. Also, finding ways to help the US right now isn't difficult as we don't have a functioning government. We need all of the help we can get.
•
u/that_can_eh_dian_guy 7h ago
Not OP but that's generally how we look at it. We lump the 1/3rd that voted for Trump and the ones who couldn't be bothered to come out to vote against him in the same group.
His first term we didn't because it was a unknown (sort of) quantity. But the second term is inexcusable.
We also do understand that there are people working for the better and try not to lump everyone together.

In fairness, the US helped us (Canada) last summer when we had forest fires, so we can't say the US never helps us.
That said I've had to breathe American forest fire pollution, it sucks, but smoke doesn't stop at borders and there is nothing we can do short of clearcutting everything, which is dumb. Anyone demanding something be done about the smoke crossing borders illegally is also dumb.
→ More replies (2)•
u/finemustard 7h ago
Yup, it's just the nature of us both having massive countries with tons of forest. It's completely unrealistic to think that either of us could completely mitigate all of the fire risk in all of our forests. And if the U.S. can't do it with 10x our population, there's no way we can, either.

He said he plans to call Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney later Friday “to find out what they are going to do about it.”
For fucks sake. Our house starts to burn down, and our neighbors run in to help. Their house starts to burn down, and we call them to demand they tell us what they are going to do about it because the smoke is starting to bother us.

Good thing our idiot president isn't in charge of deploying our firefighters.
While several crews have been deployed, the truth is that the deployment to Canada isn't that large right because the US is also experiencing a busy fire season. By contrast in 2023, when the US had a quieter fire season, over 2500 firefighters and support personnel were deployed to Canada.

As your great all knowing leader as stated it is all their fault for not managing their forests. Everyone knows that you have to rake up the leaves. Nobody rakes up leaves like the US not even Finland in the winter who don't get any forest fires. It's just sad that Canada isn't willing to learn from such sage advice that is absolutely coming from a great place. Your leader is doing the favour but they won't accept it which is why they should be part of the US. It's the only thing that makes sense.

also remind them of Nicholas Dale. a helicopter pilot from Vancouver island who died in a helicopter crash while fighting forest fires in Colorado just 3 days ago. the next day lawmakers from Michigan wrote a letter to Canada telling us to do more to fight our forest fires because it annoys their tourists. 2 days after he died, Trump started to public threaten us with tariffs if we didnt stop our forest fires.
we should recall all of our equipment and personnel from the USA and redirect it to Canadian fires until the Americans learn to STFU. if americans want us to do more at home, we can do that by stop helping them with theirs.
his name was Nicholas Dale, he died as a Canadian forest fire fighter helping America, and then Americans threatened us for not fighting fires enough. fuck americans.

There are two:
- Trump and republicans are pieces of shit who refuse to help anyone other than themselves.
- America is dealing with several wildfires of its own right now and has over 17k firefighters deployed to more than 23 large wildfires. https://www.nifc.gov/nicc
Typically, we would still help our neighbor to the north, as we did in 2023 under the Biden admin. So I have to assume politics from the Orangecompoop are in play.

Well they combined a bunch of DOI firefighters into a new agency with so little planning or thought the new agency is hemorrhaging it's best and brightest to other local fire agencies (state, county, etc).
On top of that the hiring executive orders delayed getting seasonal fire crews hired.
On top of that general federal morale is so low because of all the people (who support hiring, budget, etc for fire) have left due to the insane anti federal employee rhetoric by this admin and the right.
On top of that the fire strategy for this year is "full suppression" instead of letting it burn when appropriate, putting more pressure on an already depleted wildland firefighting force.
So I'm betting even if the agency was allowed to help (and to be fair, I've seen no such policy not allowing help) they're busy fighting our own fires with depleted resources (and giving their lives for it, three just died in Colorado), and knowing all the fire employees on the ground that I do every single one of them would bend over backwards to help Canada or Mexico if it were up to them
