Me, having a memory Googled when Dump just emptied a dam - “In early 2025, President Trump ordered the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to abruptly release billions of gallons of water from two federal reservoirs in California’s Central Valley: Terminus Dam at Lake Kaweah and Schaefer Dam at Lake Success. Local officials and water experts criticized the move as poorly planned and reckless, noting it nearly caused downstream flooding and that the federal system does not connect to Los Angeles as Trump falsely claimed to justify the release.”

why does the president even have unilateral power to order such a thing without AT LEAST some significant evidence or compelling reason to believe there is a classified or urgent matter that requires such swift and drastic executive action?

Honestly though, I feel like the Confederacy never really left. There is a part of the country that is doing great in innovation and technology, leading the world in science. And then the other part of the country where people are religious and want to live in the 1500's where they can own people, but with the conveniences of the 21st century. The latter is holding up the advances that the other half is trying to make, and they keep making those kinds of people. I'm not saying we should join Canada, there are some things that I am proud of being an American. But it would be great if we can strive to be a bit closer to how they govern, and have more of a population that's not proud to be stupid.

I'm Canadian and still remember the night Obama got elected. I was hanging out with a friend who was originally from America and we were talking about how cool it was that America had elected a Black man as President for the first time. She was so proud of her home country. We thought things were finally getting better.
Seems a bit silly in hindsight.
26
u/CombatTechSupport 11h ago
Unfortunately the combination of 9/11 and Obama getting elected have broken the country. 9/11 allowed the authoritarians in the States to begin building the blocks of a total surveillance state and start curtailing human rights. Obama's election allowed them to tap into the deep well of racism and fear still present in many older Americans, allowing them to attain electoral success. The rot was already there, arguably it's been there, festering, since the end of WW2, but those two events allowed it to finally bloom and move into the open.

It is actually fascinating to me how a country the scale of America is entirely controlled by whoever is in charge.
I mean, maybe that's a naive way of thinking but I always assumed the states largely ran themselves and the Pres was more of an 'upper management' kind of role.
Now I've learned that every last one of them is practically mindless and just thinks what the Pres thinks. If they have a good person in charge they're a great country full of friendly people. If they have a maniac in charge they're maniacs.
Americans are Lemmings. I would never have believed it without the massive shift from Obama->Trump

I'm starting to get some hope that a lot of his base is eroding based purely on Facebook comments.
A lot of the republicans running for office in MI are posting dumb shit about their "final warnings" to Canada and regurgitating Trump talking points. While those comment sections are usually full of Trump butthole lickers, they are now full of people actually calling out how dumb this rhetoric is and that we should be helping them contain the fires.
It's a small (and arguably naive) glimmer of hope, but I'm holding onto it.

He calls soldiers who fought and died "suckers and losers." How that statement alone didn't cast him into obscurity and public shame is one of the main reasons I gave up on the US.
The entire male side of my father's family fought for the US; my great grandfather was Big Red One and put down enough Nazis to earn him a pile of medals. From Sicily to Berlin, including the Africa theatre and liberation of a concentration camp in Czechoslovakia.
I spend most days now surrounded by soldiers fighting and often dying for their country.
Those words are some of the most abhorrent that I could imagine a human saying.
The country is toast with this regime running it straight into the ashes of history.

Canada sends support just every year to assist with American wildfires.
We sent crews when Texas got snow and their grid failed. The Canadian red cross has been boots on the ground after a major disaster before FEMA on more than one occasion.
Trump is doing irreparable damage to a relationship which has largely benefitted Americans because time and time again, their own country fails them.
Canadian kindness is not infinite and the well is already running pretty dry these days.
So sure, bring on the tariffs. Damage the relationship further. Hurt your American businesses, cause further financial strain to the American people because instead of saying how can we help, this dumbass administration is mad at Canada for not controlling the weather.

Canada sends support just every year to assist with American wildfires.
American here. Not just to help with wildfires either.
When 9/11 happened they commenced Operation Yellow Ribbon to help us clear our skies of air traffic as quickly as possible. A total of 224 flights carrying 30,000+ passengers and crew were diverted to Canadian airports and given assistance (food, housing, etc.).
https://www.tyndall.af.mil/News/Features/Display/Article/669731/canada-unsung-heroes-of-911/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Yellow_Ribbon
After hurricane Katrina Canada once again rushed to help us out. They sent personnel, naval and coast guard vessels, aid, etc. Not only did they also send money but they even accepted evacuees who needed a place to go.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_response_to_Hurricane_Katrina
There's a long history of Canada sending help when the US needs it and past presidents expressed their gratitude. Bush even went to Halifax in person to thank them for the help they provided after 9/11.
It's fucking shameful that Trump's response to their ongoing disaster is to threaten to bill them. He is a vile scumbag and so is anyone who agrees with his response to Canada.

Having US flights landing at YVR was no small risk to us given the airport's central location in a densely populated area; there was definitely the potential for catastrophe had one of those planes been packed full of explosives. But considering the only other option was letting 34 planes run out of fuel over the Pacific Ocean I'd say we made the right call.

Realtalk: US Wildfire response is already overstretched because of Trump idiocy. They made the decision to fight every fire as hard as possible regardless of danger, which has directly resulted in Hotshot deaths on fires that likely would have burned themselves out without threatening structures or lives.

Look, if you want to give Canada shit, the first thing you gotta know is that wildfire suppression is a provincial responsibility here. Not a federal one. Natural resources and forest management fall under provincial jurisdiction, per our constitution.
There is lots to criticize, but every time I hear this from Americans whine about "Canadian govt" I immediately stop taking them seriously. They have very little to do with it. Not nothing, but not much either. It's like whining that Trump needs to do something about the property taxes in a township in Idaho.

The areas burning are remote with no road access and limited float plane access. The best way to get around is by canoe and portage. Even then it is slow & labor intensive and that's when you're doing it for recreation (BWCA and Quetico are beautiful). Doing all that with wildland firefighting gear is even worse. It's a better use of time & money to let the fires burn while protecting structures and people from fire.
Also, our own wilderness is on fire in MN (BWCA).

The US has far more fires burning right now than Canada. Canadian firefighters and equipement are battling those fires as we speak, including one Canadian firefighter who died in Colorado this week. Furthermore, the Thumb and Bear Trap fires have both crossed into Canada from Minnesota.
Americans can seriously get right fucked! These obnoxious cunts have absolutely no empathy whatsoever.

Please do. And you can ask your state Governors to stop begging us to sell their booze.

There it is. If you needed final proof the sitting US president is a complete moron, this is it.

Canada should do the same when the California/Oregon/Washington wildfire smoke gets carried north along the coast, and then cuts west to east across southern BC.
I lived in eastern Washington and the amount of smoke we get from California due to that exact weather pattern was insane. My friends up in BC told me that that same smoke would carry up into there every year.
So Trump should just sit down and STFU.

Oh, you mean the tariffs that were given back to the companies even though we paid for them?
This guy is such a fucking dolt.

They sent firefighters when we had wildfires.
Trump threatens tariffs.
See the difference?
Trump is scum.

A canadian firefighter was recently killed fighting the wildfires in Colorado. What do the Americans offer besides threats?

This is just a symptom of American culture. The actions this last year taken by American officials that have been voted in by their citizens will never be forgotten.
