He was at the pet store I once worked at, part of a cat rescue where we got our cats from, and he was the only cat in 2 months who wasn’t being adopted because he didn’t like being picked up. But he was the cat who greeted every one that came in—dogs, cats, people—and all with friendliness and love.

I got my first apartment just to give him a home, found out he had worms, an upper respiratory infection, and double ear-infection. Later, he had what looked like idiopathic cystitis, then diabetes, then an unknown mass in his abdomen that eventually took him from me. I took him to the vet over and over throughout his life, gave him medicine, and he was amazing through it all.

I fostered several times—cats, kittens, puppies, dogs—even boyfriends 😂Whoever showed up, Hondo welcomed them all. They always loved him, and he gave them love when they needed it too.

For most of his life, I worked multiple jobs and didn’t get to see him as much as I wish I could have. I did my best, but I admit it was a struggle sometimes. I fell asleep on my floor several times, because my bed was too far. He and his sister laid on me, and I’d wake up in my work clothes with them still on me and around me, keeping me warm.

Every breakup, every loss, every move, Hondo was there. He had a habit of putting his arms around me and laying his head on my shoulder like he was hugging me. It was my favorite thing, when he’d lay his head on me. It told me he felt safe and comfortable, and it was adorable too.

Finally, when he was 9, I got a job that was stable and I could see him more. And this year, just as he turned 13, my partner helped move us into our final house. He got to enjoy a house and space and stability and love. And he saw me through it all.

Yesterday, I found his body as if sleeping under my office desk. For a few months, he has been sick with something and none of the medication I tried seemed to help. It was infuriating and heartbreaking. I am struggling because it feels so unfair.

My partner told me he waited until he saw us both safe and stable and happy. I think he’s right, but it hurts all the same. I wish I’d had another decade with him. Sending love to anyone who read this far. He was my favorite topic for so long, so I tend to ramble. I am so grateful I got to have him in my life, but how I wish it was longer. He was a treasure of a little being and the best son I could hope for honestly.

Obee needs you! We need you!

I'm looking for a Godot 4 programmer who's interested in helping bring the Obee game to life. I'll be handling the art, animation, game design, writing, and overall direction. I'm hoping to stay hands-on with the project, so I'm mainly looking for someone who can help with the programming side. That’s right, you don’t need to do the project directly. I’ll give you my plan, you tell me what should be implemented to make it work, and I will implement it in Godot myself.

I've tried asking around on programming forums before, but it didn't really go anywhere. It’s not effective at all. Since so many of you have shown interest in an Obee game, I figured I'd ask here instead.

The core mechanics of the Obee game are inspired by classic virtual pet games like Tamagotchi, so the overall gameplay loop is familiar and fairly straightforward. The game is centered around Obee. You'll be able to pet it, play with it, feed it, decorate its room, and gradually build a relationship through lots of cute interactions. Obee will have a wide variety of reactions and behaviors, giving players the freedom to interact with it in different ways.

There’s something you should know: since this is an early prototype with no budget, I can't offer payment yet. As a thank-you, you'll have free access to all Patreon builds and first-hand game design and also PLAY IT first-hand while you're actively helping with the project. If the game becomes a real thing someday and you still want to contribute, we can discuss a fair price for future collaboration.

Time zone requirement: Europe is the best. Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, New Zealand, Taiwan, and South Korea are also okay.
